Summary

The international literary icon opens his eclectic closet: Here are photographs of Murakami's extensive and personal T-shirt collection, accompanied by essays that reveal a side of the writer rarely seen by the public。

Haruki Murakami's books have galvanized millions around the world。 Many of his fans know about his 10,000-vinyl-record collection, and his obsession with running, but few have heard about a more intimate, and perhaps more unique, passion: his T-shirt-collecting habit。

In Murakami T, the famously reclusive novelist shows us his T-shirts - including gems found in bookshops, charity shops and record stores - from those featuring whisky, animals, cars and superheroes, to souvenirs of marathons and a Beach Boys concert in Honolulu, to the shirt that inspired the beloved short story 'Tony Takitani'。 Accompanied by short, frank essays that have been translated into English for the first time, these photographs reveal much about Murakami's multifaceted and wonderfully eccentric persona。

A book for Murakami's die-hard fans, though perhaps not for general readers。 Full disclosure: my copy of Murakami T: The T-Shirts I Love was won in a Goodreads giveaway。Murakami T: The T-Shirts I Love by Haruki Murakami is exactly what the title promises it to be: a book about T-shirts loved (and owned) by Murakami。 Truth in advertising certainly applies in this instance。 It is filled with photographs of individual T-shirts Murakami owns and anecdotes about each featured T, anecdotes which vary A book for Murakami's die-hard fans, though perhaps not for general readers。 Full disclosure: my copy of Murakami T: The T-Shirts I Love was won in a Goodreads giveaway。Murakami T: The T-Shirts I Love by Haruki Murakami is exactly what the title promises it to be: a book about T-shirts loved (and owned) by Murakami。 Truth in advertising certainly applies in this instance。 It is filled with photographs of individual T-shirts Murakami owns and anecdotes about each featured T, anecdotes which vary in length from a page to a sentence。 In that last instance, Murakami includes an R。E。M。 Monster T-shirt simply because, in his words, "I really like that album。" I am actually in agreement with him about that underrated album, but the Ts inclusion with such a short description feels suspiciously like padding out the book's length。The book's style is conversational, as if Murakami was talking to me and giving me a tour around his collection。 You can feel Murakami come off the page, like the book is an extension of his personality, a credit both to his writing and Philip Gabriel's translation。 This is not surprising since the book's aim is, as quoted from the back cover, to "reveal much about Murakami's multifaceted and wonderfully eccentric persona。"The T-shirt collection itself is rather underwhelming, as are a few of the stories associated with individual Ts; for some reason I found the "Superheroes" chapter to be very annoying in its nothingness while, for instance, the preceding chapters on college Ts and birds were far more enjoyable。 But the T-shirt collection is only a vehicle for Murakami to regale readers with anecdotes。 Those anecdotes can get a bit repetitive at times。 I believe this book works best as one a reader can peruse at leisure, not one to be "binge" read all at once; its repetitiveness comes through more in that case, though it frankly does not take very long to read from cover to cover。 The book's small size works in its favor as a portable tome which can be carried around and read for five or ten minutes here or there。I believe Murakami's die-hard fans will find plenty to like about Murakami T while general readers who have perhaps only read a novel or two of his will perhaps not be quite as enthused, though there will be some taken enough with his personality to find this an entertaining read。 。。。more

And now we know that, like everyone else, Murakami has plenty of novelty t-shirts that seemed cool at one time that he'll never actually wear。 And now we know that, like everyone else, Murakami has plenty of novelty t-shirts that seemed cool at one time that he'll never actually wear。 。。。more

A lot of photos of t-shirts Murakami has acquired over the years that he likes, with brief commentaries。 A quick read, but fascinating if you like his writing。 It gives a sense of his diverse interests, his quirky sense of humor, and glimpses of his life。 His descriptive mind is reflected by the shirts he chose for this book out of the many (which must be hundreds) he has collected/ accumulated。 This joins his other self-examining non-fiction books - on running and about music he likes - in maki A lot of photos of t-shirts Murakami has acquired over the years that he likes, with brief commentaries。 A quick read, but fascinating if you like his writing。 It gives a sense of his diverse interests, his quirky sense of humor, and glimpses of his life。 His descriptive mind is reflected by the shirts he chose for this book out of the many (which must be hundreds) he has collected/ accumulated。 This joins his other self-examining non-fiction books - on running and about music he likes - in making the author into a flesh-and-blood man you want to chat with over z meal or a drink。 。。。more

Disclosure: I won the book on Goodreads giveaways。 Just to clear the air of any monkey business。 Is this book going to change your life? Nah。 But it’s fun, and if you like Murakami you get the added benefit of knowing what’s in his closets and drawers。 It’s a fine little book, well made, nice design。 If you listen to some jazz and drink a beer while reading, it serves as a portal to a dimension beyond time。 Well, not really。 But if you pay attention, you sense the man Murakami in his choices of Disclosure: I won the book on Goodreads giveaways。 Just to clear the air of any monkey business。 Is this book going to change your life? This book is really quirky and interesting! Some of the t-shirt designs are really cool and it definitely fun to read about the author's perspective on why he likes certain items。 The essays are easily to read through and it's easy to put it down and pick it back up again when you want something light in between doing things。 I read a lot of them in between studying as a mini break for my brain。 It is strange it is a book though, it would make more sense to be like a blog post or something。 Stil This book is really quirky and interesting! A wonderful gift book just in time for the holidays。 Haruki Murakami has long been known to be a bit of an obsessive vinyl collector, but he has also amassed a large T-shirt collection over the years。 In large colorful photographs, and light。 breezy, conversational essays, the legendary author talks about some of his particular favorites。 A fun addition to a Murakami collection, and you might find yourself looking up some items on eBay as you read。

What a fun book! While it may not be intense or symbolic or profound like most of his fiction, it is totally Murakami。 I really enjoyed seeing the personal side of the author I’ve grown to love。 The book also includes a ton of photos of the T’s Murakami has amassed in a lifetime of globetrotting adventures。 While you may not walk away pondering the possibilities of time travel or talking cats, you might just spend a pleasant evening flipping through the places and stories (and shirts!) that have What a fun book! This is a curious little nonfiction essay collection from Haruki Murakami, who I mostly know from his dreamlike, surreal novels。 Here, Murakami writes about the many T-shirts he has collected over the years。 The essays are grouped by theme, such as Whiskey shirts, Surf Shop shirts, Vinyl Record shirts, shirts with birds on them, or bears, or lizards。 Many of the essays and interviews were previously published in a the magazine “Popeye” from 2018 to 2020 and have been collected in this volume。The This is a curious little nonfiction essay collection from Haruki Murakami, who I mostly know from his dreamlike, surreal novels。 Here, Murakami writes about the many T-shirts he has collected over the years。 The essays are grouped by theme, such as Whiskey shirts, Surf Shop shirts, Vinyl Record shirts, shirts with birds on them, or bears, or lizards。 Many of the essays and interviews were previously published in a the magazine “Popeye” from 2018 to 2020 and have been collected in this volume。The design of this slim book is quite nice。 It features high quality, full color photographs of each of the t-shirts discussed。The essays themselves are roughly 3-5 pages each and easy to read。 Good for casually picking up and reading an essay or two here and there。 I enjoyed this essay collection and it was fun reading Murakami’s anecdotes about his shirts。 However, there wasn’t too much depth or detail about the author himself。 I received a free copy of this book through a Goodread’s giveaway。 All thoughts on it are my own。 。。。more

Haruki Murakami has certainly been keeping his translators busy this year。 First, he published the very good short-story collection First Person Singular, and, later this fall, he’ll be publishing in English a rather slim volume of autobiography about his T-shirt collection, of all things。 That book is called Murakami T: The T-Shirts I Love and features photos and essays of more than 100 T-shirts in his massive collection — some that he never wears and keeps inside boxes。 The short essays first Haruki Murakami has certainly been keeping his translators busy this year。 First, he published the very good short-story collection First Person Singular, and, later this fall, he’ll be publishing in English a rather slim volume of autobiography about his T-shirt collection, of all things。 That book is called Murakami T: The T-Shirts I Love and features photos and essays of more than 100 T-shirts in his massive collection — some that he never wears and keeps inside boxes。 The short essays first appeared in the Japanese men's fashion magazine Popeye not too long ago, and this book also features a couple of interviews Murakami did for the same magazine around the time that the photos and essays were published, just to pad things out a little bit。 (I found that the interview section did repeat some information found in the essays, so I’m not entirely sure why it’s there in this book or was even included in the magazine to begin with, except that, in the case of the former, it slightly lengthens a very short book。)Murakami T is a slim volume, so slim that you can read it in less than an hour。 It is the length of a couple of magazine pieces, so I’m not sure why it is getting a standalone book when this sort of thing might have been more easily published and be much more digestible as, say, a New Yorker article。 While the book sort of works as a bit of autobiographical writing, it is not very revealing。 The most revealing piece of information is that the author buys a lot of his T-shirts at thrift shops, such as those offered by Goodwill or the Salvation Army。 The other piece of information that’s interesting is that Murakami doesn’t wear a lot of these shirts。 After all, some of the T-shirts he receives are from his publishers around the world who send him promotional items based on his work。 It turns out that the author is a bit of a private man, and doesn’t like to be recognized in public, so he has to wear clothing that is as inconspicuous as possible。 However, it seems that he also doesn’t like to throw out stuff — he cops to mentioning in this collection that he keeps all his pencil stubs, even when they’re so short that they can’t be used in a pencil sharpener。 Thus, Murakami is a packrat。 That I didn’t know。 (He also has a collection of vinyl records, mostly jazz, numbering in the tens of thousands, so if I ever visit Japan, I know whose home I’m going to break into to steal stuff from。 That’s a joke。 I love jazz on vinyl。)Read the rest of the review here: https://zachary-houle。medium。com/a-re。。。 。。。more
